Introduction
Welcome to PyBake 2024!
If you are reading this, the challenge has already begun! You have until 6pm local time, May 23rd, to submit your answers to the submission forms. The challenge can be tackled in teams of up to 5 participants, or individually.
The Challenge
Your challenge consists of two levels.
Level 1
This is a series of straightforward (although not necessarily simple) pure-Python challenges, with fixed, objective answers. This level can be tackled solo, or in your teams. Either way, you must complete level 1 before advancing to level 2.
These challenges can be done locally or in Ansys Notebook. They should be Python version agnostic, but it is recommended that you use 3.9-3.11.
Level 2
This is a single, subjective, challenge to do with constructing simple bridges. You are provided with the tools and framework you need to build a bridge using Python and Ansys Mechanical APDL. You must then design the cheapest bridge you can, within the constraints provided. There is no single right answer! The team with the lowest, working, design will win and each member will receive a prize. You do not get any points for working alone.
We recommend you tackle this challenge in teams.
Ansys Notebook & Local Work
These challenges can be tackled locally, or in Ansys Notebook. If you wish to tackle it locally, you will need a copy of Ansys Mechanical APDL. If you don't have access to this through your institution you can download a copy of Ansys Student and install that, which includes it.
If you wish to work locally instead of in Ansys Notebook we have provided the means to do so. However, we recommend at least keeping some of your work in Notebook because if something goes wrong we can access that space after the event and check your working!
Ansys Notebook Instructions
Ansys Notebook is an online, browser-based, jupyter-like environment you can use to perform all the challenges presented here. You do not need to install anything (besides a browser, which you should have if you're reading this!). You will be emailed with credentials to get access to this when receiving the event material. You can also read this blogpost for some more information as well. Jupyterlab quick-start.
Click here to go to the Ansys Notebook/OnScale page Then you should login with the credentials you were provided via email.
Finally, select "PyBake 2024 Group" from the account select step and you should be good to go!

Local Setup Instructions
You will need an installation of Ansys Mechanical APDL, which comes for free with Ansys Student.
You will need an installation, or virtual environment, of Python that is of version 3.9 - 3.11 inclusive.
Download the accompanying level 2 file set to the location you wish to work.
You will need to make sure the packages listed in the requirements.txt file are installed in your environment. Run
C:\> python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
in the command line, in that directory, to do so.
Next install the ansyscodefest .whl file from the same location.
C:\> python -m pip install ansyscodefest-0.1.13-py3-none-any.whl
Finally, run jupyterlab from the directory you are working in.
C:\> jupyterlab
Now you can open the level2.ipynb file and begin the challenge proper.
Answer Submission
The respective pages should include the submission forms you need. However, we have included them both below as well.
